Seeking God: Not weeds

Reading: Matt 13:24-30, Psalm 28:1-9

Christ: While the owner of a good field was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed weeds among his grain. In the morning, the owner’s servants ask whether they should pull up the weeds. ” ‘No,’ ” he says, ” ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned, and then gather the wheat into my barn.’ ” The owner is not worried about the presence of weeds because they will not affect the grain’s growth. If you hold both a weed and a wheat seed together in your hand, neither will be changed in their DNA; they are what they are. As it is with you, your faith in Me and decision to become My disciple has completely transformed you. This is why My apostle Paul wrote, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). You are no longer “weeds”, but I have made you hardy stalks of good grain which will stand the test of time.

Think: God refuses to risk that even one valuable life is lost. 2 Peter 3:9 says that God is patient, “not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” It is for this reason that he waits to deal out his final justice. In the meantime, we must be like David, who cries out to God constantly for deliverance while at the same time having complete confidence in God’s protection and provision.

Pray: Dear Lord, We are only simple stalks of grain that cannot survey the field as you can. Sometimes I am afraid, because from my point of view, all I can see are weeds. As the wicked crowd in from every side, let us take comfort in our new identity as your beloved which will be harvested for the Kingdom’s purpose in the end. We fully trust in you. Amen.
