aside Joshua 1

Scripture
“This is my command – be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9)
Observation
The Lord calls Joshua to take the place of Moses as leader of Israel. He promises success in taking over the the promised land, but only if they do not deviate from His instruction. He charges Joshua several times to be strong and courageous.
Application
To participate in God’s plan, we also need to do our part and step out in faith. Joshua didn’t have any experience fighting or leading at this point. He had just been wandering in the desert his whole life up to this point. And now all of a sudden he is expected not only to lead thousands of people on a road trip, but also drive out all inhabitants of the promised land and split up the land fairly among Israel. Even so, Joshua does not avoid the call or complain about it like Moses did  (Exodus 3), but we see him spring into action in Verse 10.
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for Joshua’s example of obedience. As Christians we are all called to minister to those around us. Please show me where I need to be strong and courageous today.
